Herbal study is a very important topic in Tibetan Medicine. More than 70% of the pharmacopeia is based on herbs. This study is diffused in the whole program, with basic herbs and formulas being introduced here in a concise way allowing going in depth into herbalism. Specific herbs and advanced formulas are then gradually introduced in subsequent Pharmacology class.

Our Pharmacology studies consist of two modules with the following content:

TibMET 3/TTM 2 Materia Medica (9 h)

     •   Categories of materia medica

     •   Study of herbs and other substances

TibMET 3/TTM 2 Pharmacology (21 h)

     •   Pharmaceutical aspects

     •   Principles of application

     •   Pacifying and Purgative medication

     •   Formulation

This first module in Materia Medica consists of five live interactive online lectures totaling 9 hours with Dr. Tenzing Jinpa Bhutia, Principal of Sowa Rigpa International College in Kathmandu, Nepal.  This module is more foundational, presenting the fundamental principles of Sowa Rigpa herbal studies following the Explanatory Tantra chapters 19 to 21, as well as a focus on substances mentioned in the Root Tantra, as well as herbs in Medicine Buddha's Tanadug Mandala.

The class is conducted in English.
